Love and Devotion, The Gruuthuse Manuscript

Bruges 2013

Egidius waer bestu bleven? These are the first words of the song for Egidius, one of the most beautiful scripts within the Middle Dutch literature. The text is part of a much larger parchment manuscript, bundling poems, prayers and songs. It was written in Bruges around 1400 and is now known as the Gruuthuse manuscript. During spring 2013 the Gruuthuse manuscript could exceptionally be viewed in the Gruuthuse museum. Approximately 250 objects dating from the period around 1400 bring to life the cultural, social and religious climate in Brugge at the time of the Gruuthuse manuscript.
