Bruges at War
2014
On the ground floor of the Stadshallen (Town Halls) historian Sophie De Schaepdrijver exhibits the little known story of Bruges as a city under siege, simultaneously functioning as a base of operations for war at sea. ‘Bruges during war times’ zooms in on daily life in an occupied city, however focusing on the international dimension of the first world war as well. Even if Bruges played a less important role during the first world war, compared to cites such as Ieper, Poperinge or Passendale, its situation was nevertheless unique and worth telling its story.
